Working with Layers

What Are Layers?

Layers are individual elements in your screenshot—text, images, and shapes. Each layer can be positioned, sized, styled, and edited independently. The layer order determines the visual stacking (like in Photoshop).

Adding Layers

Text Layers

Click the "Add Text" button in the toolbar. A default text layer will appear. Select it to edit the text, font, size, color, and alignment in the Properties panel.

Image Layers

Click "Add Image" to upload an image from your computer. You can resize, rotate, and position it on the canvas. Supported formats: JPG, PNG, WebP, and more.

Shape Layers

Use the shape tool to draw rectangles, circles, triangles, and lines. Select a shape type, then click and drag on the canvas to create it. Customize the fill color and stroke.

Editing Layers

Selecting Layers

Click on a layer in the canvas to select it, or click in the Layers panel on the right. Selected layers show a blue highlight.

Moving & Resizing

Click and drag a selected layer to move it. Use the resize handles in the corners and edges to change its size. Hold Shift while dragging to maintain aspect ratio.

Properties Panel

The Properties panel on the right shows all editable properties for the selected layer: position, size, rotation, opacity, and type-specific settings.

Layer Controls

Visibility Toggle

Click the eye icon next to a layer to hide it temporarily. Hidden layers don't export.

Lock/Unlock

Click the lock icon to lock a layer, preventing accidental edits. Locked layers can still be hidden but won't be selected when clicking on them.

Duplicate

Click the copy icon to duplicate a layer. The copy appears directly above the original.

Delete

Click the trash icon to delete a layer. This cannot be undone in the current session.

Reorder

Use the arrow buttons to move layers up and down in the stacking order. The order determines which layers appear on top.

Text Highlights

You can color individual words or phrases within a text layer to make key copy stand out—no extra layers needed.

  1. Select a text layer and highlight some characters in the text box in the Properties panel.
  2. Pick a highlight color with the color swatch, then click "+ Color selection".
  3. The selected words render in that color on the canvas. Each highlight is listed below, where you can change its color or remove it.

Highlights work per language: when previewing a non-default language, your highlights are saved for that language. Until you set your own, the default language's highlight ranges are reused (the Properties panel lets you know when this fallback is in effect). See Translations & Languages.

Layer Naming

Click on a layer's name to edit it. Descriptive names help you stay organized, especially with many layers.

Copying & Pasting Layers

Right-click a layer to copy it, then right-click on another screenshot to paste it there. This lets you reuse designs across multiple screenshots.

Pro Tips

  • • Lock important layers to avoid moving them accidentally
  • • Use descriptive names to find layers quickly in large projects
  • • Group related layers by naming them with prefixes (e.g., "hero-", "text-")
  • • Duplicate screenshots before making major changes—use them as backups
  • • Hide layers while working on others to reduce canvas clutter
